Kinda a Pig Deal
Ok so I have to admit the title to this blog is not original but I love it! One of my super close friends mom gave us a little wooden sign that says "I'm kinda a pig deal." Since she knows we are pig farmers it fits us perfectly! It hangs in my kitchen and I always get comments on it. It is one of my favorite signs. She always finds us little things and we love them!
With that out of the way it is that time of year again. This is how the sign ties into this time on the farm. It is one of the busiest times on the farm I think. Most people are thinking about their holiday meals, cold weather, presents, family, and days off from work or school. Some of us crazy people are thinking fair time and filling our freezers! I know what the heck right, but most breeders have bred their gilts and sows ( mama pigs or soon to be new mamas) by now for the upcoming fair season to be born in time for fair. As always we are excited! We have done this for so many years now that it almost becomes routine but something always happens to make it a new and fun learning experience.
As we prepare for farrowing season this marks my daughters last year of 4H before she off into the big wide world of college! We are going to soak up every minute we can and enjoy our summer.
When January rolls around we are always on baby watch. When piggies come we are always on like newborns moms. When mama needs a break we make sure she gets it. We are pig nannies if you will lol. Ensuring that all the little piggies make it and mama is spoiled.
The amount of leadership this has taught our kids is beyond words. The kids are early to rise and always a much needed hand when we need them.
After 6 weeks they go to their forever homes. We always miss them but know they are are going to be growing into something amazing.
We have had many pigs grow up to win many awards. Grand champion market, reserve market, grand champion gilt, reserve champion gilt, grand champion showmanship, reserve grand champion showmanship and many more.
We love this way of life! We have lived it for so many years that we look forward to the birthing process and the whole 9 yards. Even though it is frustrating and long, but also amazing, and unforgettable. Here is to making this next birthing season "kinda a pig deal!"
